Many folks have emailed lots of questions after our initial information session. Here are some of the most frequently asked questions.

 Whether you are a newbie to cabin camping or an expert camper, we want to ensure that you have all the information you need to make the most of your experience. So sit back, relax, and learn more about Camp BlackOut!

1. Where is the camp located? 
Camp BlackOut is located at Camp Dark Waters in Medford, New Jersey.

2. Why Camp BlackOut?


Studies have shown that spending time in nature can improve mental health, especially for
people of color. Researchers have found that Black people experience significant improvements in their mental health when exposed to nature.


Sharing space, resources and a commitment to healing, Jajhira, Deandra, and Lorraine created
Camp BlackOut to fill the need for safe spaces in nature. At Camp BlackOut, we hope to provide an opportunity for Black and Brown people to access nature's healing powers, and to build meaningful connections with each other and the environment.


4. What is Camp BlackOut?


A camp for our Black and Brown community.....Think arts & crafts, field day, spade tournament, family cookout, and day party all in one - in nature.

Also, know...Camp BlackOut is a safe space purposely provided for people of color to give back
to our lives, have fun, laugh, make new friends, and enjoy healing in a safe judgment-free
community environment.
 
3. How do I know the camp is safe and clean? 


Camp BlackOut is a safe space created for all attendees. We take pride in ensuring our camp is clean and secure for everyone. Camp Dark Waters is an ACA-accredited camp (American Association of Camps) that follows policies and procedures for cleaning camp property.
 
4. Is the space for Black people only? 

Everyone at Camp BlackOut is Black and Brown. This safe space is designed for us. If you're part of the Black and Brown People of the majority diaspora, love life, and love your Blackness and Brownness, Camp BlackOut is for you. Blackness and Brownness are not monolithic and neither are we - EVERY type of Black and Brown person is welcome (we respect and appreciate diversity in gender, sexuality, relationship status, income, education, and religion).
 
5. Can I come alone or with my squad? *Please note Camp Blackout is women only in 2024


You can attend solo and make new friends OR attend with friends and still get to know new
friends. Just to be clear- adults only.


We encourage everyone to build new connections and relationships with each other and to grow
our Camp BlackOut community together.

 
6. What's the food and alcohol situation?


Glad you asked.....


All food, snacks, and drinks that are specific to the camp theme are included. We've hired a local chef to curate the menu for our time together. We are thinking about a variety of culinary needs (i.e. vegan, gluten-free). Please include any allergies or dietary restrictions.


If you want to bring alcohol and snacks for yourself OR share with the cabin...Let’s do it!’
 
7. Do we need toilet paper?  


No, you do not need toilet paper. The camp has basic supplies. Bathrooms and shower areas provide toilet paper. Please bring your favorite toiletries.
 
8. What’s happening this weekend? What does the weekend itinerary look like? 


The camp has many camp activities. There is ping-pong and archery, kayaking, canoeing, swimming, a swing where you can jump in the water, arts and crafts, or you can do nothing at all. There’s a beautiful space to just connect with nature online and untether from the outside world.

 

If you have any ideas for activities you would like to participate in or lead, let us know.
We can include that in the activity list.
 
9. Is there anything that Camp BlackOut needs from me as a camper? Yes- we need You to share your positive energy, have fun and enjoy. And yes,- we need volunteers for our various committees and activities.

  • Entertainment committee

    • Those campers with a special talent who want to lead an activity.

  • Set up and clear-up committee-

    • Campers that desire to support the Chef and kitchen staff by cleaning and setting up the dining hall for meals

  • Welcome committee-

    • Campers that can help bring arriving campers to their cabins.

    • Show them around camp when the campers arrive.
